The history of football games is intertwined with the history of English football; England is considered as the home of football games. History has recorded evidence of medieval game of football complete with teams and supporters; modern English football games started as an effort to unify English public schools and university football games. The world’s oldest football competition, the FA Cup, and the very first association football league were founded in England. It is the national sport of England and is played all over the United Kingdom.
However, there is no national football team for the United Kingdom. The football games in the U.K. are conducted separately for the four countries of the United Kingdom under the management of national football associations within each country. The club football league systems are also separate. There are individual national cups, such as the FA Cup in England, the Scottish Cup in Scotland, the Welsh Cup in Wales, and the Irish Cup in Northern Ireland. The U.K. teams have played against each other countless times. The first ever international football match in the world was between Scotland and England.
The English football league system, a series of interconnected leagues, has thousands of divisions. Among these, The Premier League ranks first followed by The Football League. The Premier League is the top most English football competition. It is the most profitable football league and is also the most watched sports league of the world. An English football fanatic can never get enough of the Premiership football games. The 20 clubs in The Premier League plays against each other twice in the course of a season; the teams are awarded points; and at the end of the season, the team with the most points becomes the champion. Each competition has been named by the sponsors of the Premiership; for example the Barclays Premiership is sponsored by the leading financial services firm Barclays. Similarly, there had been FA Carling Premiership and Barclaycard Premiership.
Television has played a major role in English football games. From 1937 onwards, it has been constantly on TV. The importance of this medium was made more discernible when The Premier League sold the broadcasting rights of its competitions to Sky Television, which increased their earnings and gave more exposure. Now, TV football games in the U.K. are dominated by the coverage of The Premier League. Along with the club revenue, the profit from TV rights has made The Premier League the most lucrative league in English football.
